We all know that the most spoken language in the world is an Asian language. Mandarin, with 960 million native speakers!! It is by far the largest of the Chinese dialect groups, and it is spoken by 70 percent of the Chinese speakers over a large geographical area.

But we’d like to show a selection of some of the “not-so-well-known or not-so-frequent languages”, but which have some demand in the voiceover market. It is not easy to find native speakers in these Asian languages, but there are some.
We present you: Asian languages you might not be aware of.
Burmese
Burmese is the official language of Myanmar, whose constitution names it the Myanmar language. The total Burmese-speaking population of the world is estimated at slightly above 32 million people.

Farsi
Farsi, also known as the Persian language. Farsi is spoken today primarily in Iran, Afghanistan -where it’s officially known as Dari since 1958-, Tajikistan -officially known as Tajiki- and Uzbekistan.

Khmer
Khmer (or Cambodian) is spoken by most of the population of Cambodia, where it is the official language; also in Southeastern Thailand, and by more than a million people in Southern Vietnam.

Marathi
It is the official language and co-official language, respectively, in the Maharashtra and Goastates of Western India. Marathi is also spoken in Israel and Mauritius. Marathi ranks 19th in the list of most spoken languages in the world.

Pashto
Originally spoken by the Pashtun people, Pashto became the national language of Afghanistan in 1936. It is spoken by more than 35 million people, most of whom reside in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Singhalese
Also spelled “Sinhalese”, it is one of the two official languages of Sri Lanka. It was first brought to Sri Lanka by settlers from Northwestern and Northeastern India in the 5th century BC.

Tamil
Spoken primarily in India. It is official language in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry, as well as in Singapore and Sri Lanka. It also has significant numbers of speakers in Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, and South Africa.

Urdu
It is the national language of Pakistan; also officially recognized in the constitution of India and registered regional language in Nepal. The Urdu community in the United Kingdom numbers about four hundred thousand speakers.
