The Imaginarium of DVO, a place for wonder and knowledge welcomes our English voice talent Simeon, who offers us a reflection about the importance of listening to our own recordings and learn from them. That practice makes us become better voice talents, and our way of saying the words, different to everyday chatter.
Trying to engage the listener in an evocative, though provoking performance is what the client pays us for: they need their message to be conveyed in the best possible way. That’s where we come in.
To be able to do that, we spend time honing our skills. And auditioning. Sometimes our efforts are fruitful and we get hired, other times it’s not so easy. But even if we don’t get jobs quickly, practice is great to improve our performance quality. And really, we have to be as good as we can be.
It’s like ethics: it’s what you do when nobody’s looking. And it’s a solitary job. But a worthy investment in time and practice.
So, in order to be the best you can be:
- Listen to your own recordings, and be your own judge of quality and performance.
- Never send anyone a second rate demo.
- Put your life and soul into each and every audition that you do.
If you set the bar high enough, any prospective client will understand how good your performance can be, and therefore, hopefully, hire you, comfortable in the knowledge that you will give them the best you possibly can, all the time.
